2/13/07 - reflection

Reflections regarding class: 2/13/07
We spent much of the evening reviewing procedures for PowerPoint. We watched several examples of presentations and critiqued them. I took what I learned to my classroom. PowerPoint has great interest for my students. I went home and reflected on my present reading class and decided that PowerPoint would be the perfect format for writing and illustrating poems. I first showed my students a demonstration of a PowerPoint presentation that I had made on a poem. Students seemed to look forward to the next day's challenge of making their own presentation. Instructions were simple and to the point. Each student completed their own presentation filled with illustrations. The computer lab was often pretty silent with working computers until a student had a question. I felt this was an excellent way for students to read poems and conceive their personal interpretations - about the poem and about themselves. The students were very excited and all students were successful. This is a general education reading class with full inclusion of Special day students, resource students, and general education students. Students are reading from 1.8 GE to 3.2GE - they are in either 7th or 8th grades.
On the following day, the students wrote their own poems "I am." They worked with a partner and seemed to enjoy writing it. There was a great deal of laughter. We followed this with going to the computer lab and making a new PowerPoint presentation. Success. Students actually got to participate in the lesson not only by writing but also by illustrating and walking away with a professional project. Poetry walked into their minds.
Next, time to add the music.

Why is it important for our kids to know technology.
Our students need as much help as possible to know and understand technology. As 80% of sp. needs kids stay at home after graduation.

Students can be taught how to learn.....
there are many software programs with similar knowledge.
The struggles that we have - over 25 years old

How can you use these newfound skills and knowledges to help your students? Where are your reflections?
