Reflection
What kind of mark do you want to leave on your students?
I want to leave the a mark on my students of knowingness and independence. I want my students to know that they can and they can do it well. First, I want my students to develop basic reading skills; learn to use those skills for comprehension, vocabulary development and reading fluency. Through positive learning experiences they will learn confident. I want them to know enough about technology that when they need assistance, they know how to find it independently. Students like technology, have fun with it, and feel comfortable using it. I also want to leave the mark that my students can use technology as a positive learning tool.
Assistive technology can motivate students. Students can make books and individualized answers to lessons. It offers the teacher the potential of differentiated lesson planning to suit the goals and needs of all her/his students. If a teacher has selected software programs, most often they come in levels of ability. So, the teacher can easily differentiate the lessons for various levels of competency.
For Reading fluency - Repeated readings are used to increase reading fluency. There are taped books and AT sites that read print books aloud. One can make a storyboard in PowerPoint and read the text over and over or they can tape their own voice reading the presentation. Fluency can be developed through software programs that target this skill. Our book gives various examples:
www.scilearn.com
www.donjohnston.com
Interactive software can assist students who need motivation.
www.itellitools.com
For writing, I think that when students talk to one another through the free email sites or a site like blogger.com they have more motivational support. Motivation is given to both student and teacher. I think it is important for the teacher to guide the subjects that the students write about on the email or blogger. However, these sites give the students the opportunity to communicate about selected subjects to their peers. This helps students develop writing because of the motivational and communicative aspects.
In the area of communication and speech – One needs to develop expressive and receptive language. This deals with vocabulary, synonyms, antonyms, homophones and word meanings. Our group listed several ideas that would assist the teaching of vocabulary.

I like this class and feel that you make each of your students comfortable. You have a kind manner that is supplemented with incredible amounts of information. I am so impressed and I sense that you are an amazing teacher with your day students.

I see great potential for the use of powerpoint in my own classes. I have students who really enjoyed doing power point and now I will assist them with adding sound and movement to their projects. I will study the talking books and see if I can add sound to their poem project from last week.
I feel that most people in the class see great value in powerpoint and enjoyed learning as much as possible.

I would like more information on the assisted web sites and will continue to research this on my own.
One of the sites that would help my 9th grade students (I heard about it but did not get the name) would be listening to what they have written so they can edit it on their own. Where do I find information on this site?

I walked out of class with the blog opened and so nothing was saved from last night.
I will work on this. I think I get so flooded with new ideas and information that I just go unconscious. I also have to drive for an hour home and I am often thinking of that.

2/13/07 - reflection

Reflections regarding class: 2/13/07
We spent much of the evening reviewing procedures for PowerPoint. We watched several examples of presentations and critiqued them. I took what I learned to my classroom. PowerPoint has great interest for my students. I went home and reflected on my present reading class and decided that PowerPoint would be the perfect format for writing and illustrating poems. I first showed my students a demonstration of a PowerPoint presentation that I had made on a poem. Students seemed to look forward to the next day's challenge of making their own presentation. Instructions were simple and to the point. Each student completed their own presentation filled with illustrations. The computer lab was often pretty silent with working computers until a student had a question. I felt this was an excellent way for students to read poems and conceive their personal interpretations - about the poem and about themselves. The students were very excited and all students were successful. This is a general education reading class with full inclusion of Special day students, resource students, and general education students. Students are reading from 1.8 GE to 3.2GE - they are in either 7th or 8th grades.
On the following day, the students wrote their own poems "I am." They worked with a partner and seemed to enjoy writing it. There was a great deal of laughter. We followed this with going to the computer lab and making a new PowerPoint presentation. Success. Students actually got to participate in the lesson not only by writing but also by illustrating and walking away with a professional project. Poetry walked into their minds.
Next, time to add the music.
I posted the Blog too soon. Barbara Noonan

universal design

2/06/07

Sharon, today is 2/07/07. I left a notebook in the class. Do you remember if anyone noticed and possibly saved it for me? I will call special education today.

I just ordered the books for your class. The assignment in class was helpful to complete the assignment due 2/13/07's. I am the one middle school student who went with the high school group. My students range in age from 13-16 years of age and I feel the high school group was the appropriate choice.

I learned more about universal design last night and I have one comment. I have the opportunity to use computer once and at the most twice a week for my classes. Do you want the unit to reflect the reality about computer availability or do want the assignment to reflect the near future when all classrooms will be equipted with computers?

Will I be able to do assignments using Quark Express?

Do you want the assignment due on 2/13/07 to be emailed or given to you in class as a hard copy? I would prefer giving you a hard copy using the software program: Quark Express.

I have zero experience using audio in Word programs. I have never had the need to use excel (use integrated pro for grades) and do not have any experience using it. However, in a class many years ago I did a couple of assignments using it.....I have forgotten how to do it at this time.

Our school has a membership to United Streaming and we use it constantly throughout our school. I will be using it as a source in my assignment.

Great new websites - thanks so much.

you can create your own wiki - people can comment and collaborate

Question: given you can manipulate pics or manipulate docs or create movies, audio- What is the barrier in doing that for special needs students?
Can websites be read by special education students?
Do they have audio support? are those areas highlighted.
Are most web sights universally designed?
Are there standards for web sites? Yes
If you are going to use technology for learning you have to make sure it is something that they can understand and learn.
For students can learn Universal Design does not support only one curriculum; however the way the curr. is developed must be understood by students. Standards remain the same.

Students have access to nimax - There are companies that will do scaning and bringing in to MWord.
How do you set it up and address as many learn. styles and learn needs as possible?
Sp. Ed teachers have the advantage of knowing how our students learn because of the IEP process. Our students are often into general education with accommodations and modifications.

That puts a hugh burden on the GE teacher who do not have this training.

Mainstreaming is appropriate with a push in model. GE teachers are upset and also without training as to multiple learning styles.
